Why does a PrestaShop shop get slow?

Often because of settings left as in development: debug mode on, templates recompiled on every visit, CSS and JavaScript not combined, browser cache off. Then there’s the server, oversized images and modules that run on every page. Speed-up checks all of this and tells you where to start.

how it works

How does Speed-up work?

  • A complete, explained check: every item has a status (OK, Warning, Critical, Can’t be checked) and tells you why it matters and how to fix it.
  • One-click fixes: row by row or with “Apply recommended settings”, with the list of what changes before you confirm and a “before → after” summary.
  • Always reversible: “Undo the last change” or the history restore the previous values.
  • Measured response times: home, a category, a product and a CMS page as a visitor sees them, with a before-and-after history.
  • No timeouts: heavy checks work in small steps and the result is saved with the date.
  • Printable report to save as PDF, plus a JSON export of all results.
  • From the command line too: php bin/console flagperf:check, with options to fix or undo.

Frequently asked questions about speeding up PrestaShop

Does it work if I don’t use Flag Theme?

Yes: it works only in the back office and adds nothing to the shop front, so it runs with any theme. With Flag Theme the page is in the Flag Theme menu; with other themes it’s in the Improve section of the menu. The CSS and JavaScript weight check uses Flag Theme’s limits: with other themes, treat it as a guide.

Can the fixes be undone?

Yes, always. Every change is logged with the old and new value: with “Undo the last change”, or from the history, you go back to the previous settings. If someone has changed one of those settings in the meantime, the module leaves it alone and tells you.

What does it fix by itself, and what not?

It fixes PrestaShop’s safe settings: template compilation and cache, CSS and JavaScript combining and compression, browser cache and the WebP format for thumbnails. It doesn’t touch the server, PrestaShop’s files or modules: for those items it tells you what to do or what to ask your hosting provider.

Does the module slow the shop down?

No: it doesn’t hook into the shop front and loads no CSS or JavaScript for customers. The heavier checks, such as response times and images, run only when you ask and work in small steps, without timeouts.

Is it a page cache?

No. Speed-up checks and fixes the shop’s settings and measures response times, but it doesn’t store whole pages. It shows you whether the server time is already good, within 300 milliseconds, or whether the problem lies elsewhere: images, CSS and JavaScript, modules or hosting.

Can it clean up the database?

Yes, if you want: logs, statistics and carts without an order older than 180 days, with a mandatory preview and confirmation. It never touches orders, customers or products. Take a backup before cleaning anyway.
