What does the Omnibus rule require for discounts?

When you announce a price reduction you must show the lowest price applied in the 30 days before the reduction. This comes from EU Directive 2019/2161, known as “Omnibus”, transposed in Italy by Article 17-bis of the Consumer Code.

In practice: if a product cost €80 twenty days ago, costs €100 today and you discount it to €70, next to the discount you must show €80, not €100. Doing that by hand across hundreds of products is impossible.

how it works

How does the PrestaShop Omnibus module work?

  • It records price history by product, combination, currency, country and customer group, and only writes when the price changes.
  • It calculates the reference price for successive discounts too, and for products on sale for less than 30 days.
  • It lets you exclude whole categories, for example perishable products.
  • If you want, it uses the reference price as the strike-through price, in line with EU Court of Justice ruling C-330/23.
  • It flags discounts that aren’t real reductions and doesn’t announce them as discounts.
  • It shows the same value everywhere: product page, list cards and structured data for Google.
  • Customisable line text for each language of your shop.

Does it work with my theme?

Yes: with Flag Theme it integrates by itself; with other themes you choose in the settings where to show the line, next to the price or the strike-through price. We don’t have automated tests for themes other than Flag Theme: if the line doesn’t land where you want, we’ll help you position it.

Frequently asked questions about the PrestaShop Omnibus module

Since when does the rule apply in Italy?

Since 2 April 2023, with Legislative Decree 26/2023, which added Article 17-bis to the Italian Consumer Code. Since then every discount announcement must show the lowest price of the previous 30 days. Other EU countries have similar rules, as they all transposed the same directive.

What if the product has been on sale for less than 30 days?

The module uses the lowest price since the day the product went on sale, and says so in the line next to the discount.

Does it work with successive discounts, first 20% and then 30%?

Yes: you choose whether the reference price stays the one before the first reduction or updates with each reduction.

Does the history start from past prices?

No, it records prices from installation onwards. For discounts already running when you install the module there’s a fallback option.

Does it work with multiple currencies and customer groups?

Yes: the history is kept separately by currency, country and customer group, so every customer sees the right reference price for them.
