Upgrade or migrate: which is better?

If the old shop has lots of outdated modules or code changes, a fresh PrestaShop 9 installation plus a data copy beats an in-place upgrade. You start clean and take only what matters with you: catalogue, customers and order history.

What does NOT migrate?

We tell you up front, so there are no surprises:

  • Multistore: only the main shop is copied.
  • Abandoned carts: only carts that became orders are copied.
  • Customer service messages and visit statistics.
  • Data and settings of third-party modules.
  • Attachments and virtual product files.

Why is it a safe migration?

  • IDs stay the original ones: order numbers and references don’t change.
  • Customers don’t have to reset their password, not even those with old passwords, if you choose to transfer the old shop’s key.
  • The old shop isn’t touched: the connector only reads the data.
  • It pauses and resumes from where it stopped, without creating duplicates.
  • Data travels signed between the two shops, over HTTPS.
  • You don’t have to give anyone FTP or database access: you install the connector and copy a key.
  • Thumbnails are regenerated, in WebP and AVIF too if the new shop uses them.

    Choose what to migrate and start

    The process works in batches and shows you the progress.

    Check the result and switch off the connector

    On the old shop, when you’ve finished.

Will I lose my Google rankings with the migration?

Product IDs stay the same, so URLs can stay the same too; if they change, you need 301 redirects from the old ones to the new ones. Before going live, check the main pages and read how to avoid 404 errors after a migration.

Frequently asked questions about PrestaShop migration

Will customers have to reset their passwords?

No: passwords are copied. Even older customers’ passwords stay valid, if you choose to transfer the old shop’s key; they’re upgraded to the new format at first login.

Does the old shop stay online during the migration?

Yes: the connector only reads, it doesn’t change anything. The old shop keeps selling until you point the domain to the new one.

How long does it take?

It depends on how many products, orders and images you have. The process works in batches, shows you the progress and can be paused and resumed without losing its place.

Does it migrate from WooCommerce or Shopify too?

No, only from PrestaShop 1.7 onwards. Moving from another platform to PrestaShop needs a custom migration project.

Will I lose my Google rankings?

No, as long as the URLs stay the same or have a 301 redirect to the new ones. Product IDs stay the same, so keeping the same URLs is easier.

Does it work from PrestaShop 1.6?

No, the minimum starting version is PrestaShop 1.7.0. If you’re on 1.6, the old shop needs upgrading first.
